The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is one of the most important sources of patent applications in Germany. In 2009 alone, the Fraunhofer Institutes applied for patents for 675 new inventions. Of these, an unprecedented 522 were filed with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office.

The number of active property rights and patent applications increased to 5234, with a total of 2472 patents having been granted for the German market.
