Cloud Computing for Logistics
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft
Cloud Computing for Logistics, Dortmund
In the ‘Cloud Computing’ Innovation Cluster, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Material Flow and Logistics IML and Software and Systems Engineering ISST are developing a new generation of logistic IT support.
Logistics processes are becoming ever more complex, while demands for flexibility and dynamic control methods are constantly increasing. Current IT solutions are no longer able to map these processes adequately. The institutes’ close cooperation and their pooled knowledge of logistics and IT have allowed them to create a service-oriented platform: the Logistics Mall is a virtual marketplace where networked services and software systems are made available to users who can select and subscribe to different combinations of logistics services depending on their individual requirements. Functions offered by a range of providers can be amalgamated into a tailor-made overall package. The Logistics Mall will reach market maturity within three years (i.e. by 2012) and will be operated by the industrial partners.
