Secure identity controls access to objects of daily living. It is a basis for every business process. Secure identity is essential for operability of a highly developed society. The protection of identity with its different representation forms of biometrics, digital signatures or the future German electronic identification card thus is one of the most important challenges for civil security. Furthermore secure identity is an essential basis of future automated systems for traffic, household and industry.

The range of applications comprises efficient border control, automated registration of nursing services as well as personalized control of home appliances and also secure communication between automated guided vehicles.
The Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster ‘Secure Identity’, a research network of five Fraunhofer institutes, three universities and more than fifteen companies from Berlin and Brandenburg, concentrates the outstanding complementary competence of the capital region for processing, protection and communication of identity related data.
The research and development budget for the initial project phase of the innovation cluster until 2012 covers about 10 Million EUR. Further partners will continuously be included in order to enhance the innovation cluster to a European competence centre for civil security.
