»FUTURAS IN RES« conference: What's the IQ of AI?

The second »FUTURAS IN RES« conference will be held on November 21 and 22, 2019 and focus on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

What’s the IQ of AI?
What’s science and what’s fiction?
What’s already on the road and what’s still far off?

Under various dimensions of »intelligence« – reasoning, communication, perception, consciousness and empathy – we will explore trending AI topics like informed Machine Learning, cognitive phenomena in machines, bio-inspired and neuromorphic computing, human machine interaction or social robotics and discuss questions about legal, societal and ethical aspects.

Again, we are happy to welcome excellent international speakers from research and development, industry and start-ups, politics and society to share their ideas, projects, products, insights, foresights and concerns.

Besides the speaker program and discussions, visitors can also look forward to the Fraunhofer Science Expo and visionary artworks.

Ticket sales will start in spring 2019.

Speaker program is coming soon.

Day one

November 21, 2019

Session 1

Artificial reasoning

  • Can AI really distinguish between causation and correlation?
  • Is the human brain the right architectural model for AI hardware?
  • Are algorithms rather logical or ideological?

Under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS, various international speakers present and discuss systems, which should solve problems in a logical, deductive and reasonable way.

Session 2

Artificial communication

  • What gets lost in translation between humans and machines?
  • What’s the difference between speech-to-text and speech-to-context?
  • What’s the difference between communication and exchanging noises?

Under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS, various international speakers present and discuss systems, which should exchange information with humans in a natural way.

Session 3

Artificial perception

  • How much wisdom does an autonomous system need?
  • Does a camera experience the same things as an eye?
  • Does a microphone experience the same things as an ear?

Under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation IOSB, various international speakers present and discuss systems, which should interpret sensory information and recognize objects?

Day two

November 22, 2019

Session 4

Artificial consciousness

  • If there’s consciousness, how can we measure it?
  • Can an artificial student get smarter than its teacher?
  • Is artificial artwork really creative or just imitation?

Under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Group for Innovation Research, various international speakers present and discuss mentally flexible systems, which should be able to learn and be creative.

Session 5

Artificial empathy

  • How well do I have to know myself to comprehend others?
  • Can robots be social?
  • Should we say »Please« and »Thank You« to a machine?

Under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, various international speakers present and discuss systems, which should be able to understand human needs, intentions and emotions.

About »FUTURAS IN RES«

»FUTURAS IN RES« is derived from the expression »medias in res« and means coming straight to the point about the opportunities and challenges of our future.

Understanding the complex effects of new technologies and disruptive innovations is essential for the success of entire societies and economies. Many aspects of life, technology, experience and work will continue to converge and transform. Structural changes through technological developments must therefore be recognized, understood and communicated at an early stage – in order to actively shape long-term impacts on economic, societal, political and cultural dimensions.

With the »FUTURAS IN RES« conference, since 2018 the Fraunhofer Think Tank provides exactly the right forum for this: ideas meet solutions, visionaries meet practitioners, supporters meet admonishers, thinkers and developers come up with new questions. »FUTURAS IN RES« combines scientific excellence with internationality, future-orientation and a profound focus on sustainable value creation with benefits for industry and society.

Ticket sales will start in spring 2019.
