Living spaces of the future

The construction industry has to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to meet the constantly growing demands placed on buildings. The Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance is working continuously on interdisciplinary solutions and systems to actively shape the "living spaces of the future”. With a special show innovative products and system solutions from its construction research will be presented.

An energy-efficient means of water damage restoration

Over a million cases of water damage due to rotten pipes are reported in Germany every year. A new electric, vapor-permeable, flexible drying system developed by Fraunhofer researchers reduces the moisture evenly throughout building components in an energy-efficient manner.

A novel approach to recycling construction waste

The construction industry is one of the most resource-intensive sectors of the German economy. Four Fraunhofer Institutes have joined forces in the BauCycle project to kick-start recycling of sand and gravel fine particle fractions that cannot be reclaimed today for reuse in further construction projects. The research team will present the results of their work at the 2019 BAU trade fair.

Construction using concrete reinforced with renewable materials

Tomorrow’s building material is here today. Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is durable, formable in diverse shapes and suitable for lightweight construction. As the name suggests, conventional TRC is reinforced with carbon or glass-fiber fabrics rather than steel. A research team at the Fraunhofer Institute WKI is now replacing these fabrics with eco-friendly natural fibers.

Fraunhofer ISE at the BAU 2019

As one of the member institutes of the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE will display innovative and sustainable solutions at the special show at the BAU 2019.

What materials are future buildings made of?

Building materials have to withstand a variety of different conditions while also contributing to a healthy living environment. In addition, the materials and the manufacturing processes should be efficient and sustainable. Fraunhofer USA exhibits a new generation of building materials.

Bio-based leather for interior applications

An innovative functional vegan leather for interior design applications will be presented at the BAU trade fair in Munich from 14th to 19th January 2019 by researchers from the Fraunhofer WKI.

Functionalized technical textiles

Functionalized technical textiles enable the industry to open up and develop completely new product groups. At the BAU trade fair in Munich from 14th to 19th January, researchers from the Fraunhofer WKI will be presenting multilayer fabrics with integrated conductive material and connected LEDs.

Air collector and thermal storage materials for air conditioning in buildings

At the Fraunhofer ICT energy campus in Pfinztal, individual thermal storage systems tailored to the respective application profile are developed and tested to increase energy efficiency.

Fire protection for buildings

Researchers at Fraunhofer ICT offer expertise in the development of smart materials for special applications in fire protection, according to customer specifications, in different areas.

Insulating material based on foamed polymers

Building insulation currently plays a decisive role in reducing energy consumption and consequently energy costs, and in reducing CO2 emissions from buildings. Fraunhofer ICT will present possibilities for the thermal insulation of building facades with foamed polymers.

New concepts for life in the green city

More and more people live in cities, so that innovative processes and systems for urban greening are becoming increasingly important. Fraunhofer UMSICHT will be presenting three different projects.
