At many of its institutes, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is working on areas of research in artificial intelligence (AI) and their applications in the areas of robotics, image and language processing, and process optimization. Fraunhofer research makes significant contributions to the theory and ethics of AI and at the same time follows closely the practical needs of customers.

Fraunhofer's AI algorithms and systems are used, for example, in the advertising industry, in the automotive industry, in industrial production, in medicine and in the financial industry.

More and more institutes at Fraunhofer are dealing with artificial intelligence and learning machines. They use these technologies in a wide variety of applications – from underwater robots to the analysis of medical image data. The existing competencies are to be bundled and further developed in the Key Strategic Initiative.

Fraunhofer SPEAKER project wins award at BMWi KI innovation competition

Language assistance made in Germany

The SPEAKER project for the development of a language assistance platform "made in Germany" was awarded in the innovation competition "Artificial intelligence as a driver for economically relevant ecosystems" of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). This makes the Fraunhofer project one of 16 outstanding concepts that were able to assert themselves against the competition of over 130 submissions. The award ceremony took place on September 19, 2019 during the opening ceremony of the Digital Technologies Forum in Berlin.

Using Artificial Intelligence for Systematic Media Content Analysis

Fraunhofer presents various AI-based content analysis tools at International Broadcasting Convention 2019

This not just facilitates daily routines of media professionals, but also allows offering personalized content to media consumers – and doing so in a privacy-preserving manner.

From roads to the Internet: Planning infrastructure faster thanks to machine learning

An extensive network of fiber optic cables forms the basis for fast Internet, auto­nomous driving or parcel delivery by drone. But where are the best places for routing the cables? In order to plan cable routes, it is necessary to devise the most complete 3D model of the underlying infrastructure as possible. Until now, such planning models could not be efficiently generated in sufficient detail or with the required information density.

Professor Alexander Reiterer, Dominik Störk and Dr. Katharina Wäschle MD of the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM in Freiburg have met this challenge with a new process chain based on artificial intelligence (AI). It analyzes two-dimensional and three-dimensional data fully automatically, recog­nizes application-specific objects and integrates this information into digital plan­ning maps.

The tool can be used anywhere where objects and surfaces have to be captured and identified with centimeter accuracy. Deutsche Telekom is the first company to use the new automated technology, which enables it to plan fiber optic lines in Germany up to 70 times faster. More than 1800 civil engineering companies in Germany will use the data created by the Fraunhofer process chain to expand the fiber optic network.
