High-Performance Center for Photonics, Jena
The High-Performance Center Photonics is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, the Leibniz Institutes HKI and IPHT and the Helmholtz Institute Jena.
It is dedicated to the development of light-based solutions for important societal challenges and promotes their application in Science, Society, and Industry. It links applied research and innovative developments with scientifically excellent fundamental research, regarding the control of light – including its creation, manipulation and detection.
The next level of photonics is characterized by smart system solutions. The growing level of interconnectedness and technological convergence with semiconductor devices and technologies does not only lead to a rapid development of the products themselves. Moreover, it opens the path for smart interconnection and systems integration from single components all the way to holistic solutions. The High-Performance Center Photonics develops solutions particularly for:
- Information and communication technology
- Industrial production and manufacturing
- Automotive
- Air and space
- Security and defence
- Health and environment
- Fundamental and applied research
The High-Performance Center for Photonics is engaged in a close partnership with industry and science. It will take this engagement to the next level by establishing new models of cooperation. Essential measures are the implementation of
- an industry sabbatical program
- an open labs initiative
- a Fraunhofer Graduate Research School of Applied Photonics
- anchor projects on fiber lasers and their applications, highly dynamic optical sensors, and next generation projection- and imaging systems
