IPC Best Student Paper Award

Tobias Beckerwerth, research associate in the Photonic Components department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), was honored with the IPC Best Student Paper Award at the 2022 IEEE Photonics Conference. The PhD candidate was able to prevail against four other nominated papers. His award-winning article “High-Speed Waveguide Integrated Avalanche Photodiode on InP” emphasizes the development of integrated photodiodes for high-speed operation with increased sensitivity.

Innovation Award from the B+T Unternehmensgruppe

Best Paper Award ESTC 2022

This year’s Electronics System Integration Technology Conference (ESTC 2022) brought 350 attendees from 28 countries to the central Romanian city of Sibiu from 13 to 15 September. Among them, our colleague Steffen Bickel, researcher at Fraunhofer IZM-ASSID in Dresden, won the Best Paper Award for his contribution on “Metallurgical Aspects and Joint Properties of Cu-Ni-In-Cu Fine-pitch Interconnects for 3D Integration”.

Nominated for the German Future Prize - Prize of the Federal President for technology and innovation

The nominated team made up of Thomas Speidel, CEO of the listed ADS-TEC Energy plc (NASDAQ: ADSE) and managing partner of the ADS-TEC Group, Dr. Thorsten Ochs, Chief Technology Officer of ADS-TEC Energy, and Dr. Stefan Reichert, group leader of Power Converters at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, was among the top three finalists. The team was nominated for the development of a storage-based ultra-fast charging system, called “ChargeBox”. The ChargeBox enables fast charging of electric vehicles - in a compact form and largely independent of whether there is a connection to a high-performance network. The storage-based ultra-fast charging system only requires a normal power connection, which is common in residential and commercial buildings.

Propane heat pump from Fraunhofer ISE takes second place in the German Raw Material Efficiency Award 2022

With the "LC 150" project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE achieved second place in the competition for the German Raw Material Efficiency Award 2022 of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) in the "Research Institution" category. This honors the development of a heat pump refrigeration circuit with the environmentally friendly refrigerant propane. To this end, the institute is working with a consortium of heat pump and component manufacturers.

PCB Design Award

The Electronics Design and Manufacturing Association (FED) presented the PCB Design Awards 2022 for the sixth time at its annual conference in Potsdam, Germany. The award, sponsored by the FED, recognizes PCB designers for outstanding work every two years. A panel of six experts judges the designs in terms of technical merit, manufacturability and documentation.

Our IZM-colleague Alireza Rezaei took 2nd place in the "3D/Component Design" category for his work on the Fraunhofer lead project ZEPOWEL (Towards Zero Power Electronics). In this project, nine Fraunhofer institutes successfully demonstrated how sensor systems can consume extremely little power or function completely autonomously, thus saving up to 20 percent of carbon dioxide emissions nationwide.

The NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) has honoured Dr. Michael Wunder, Head of the Research Department "Information Technology for Command and Control Systems" (ITF) at Fraunhofer FKIE, with the NATO STO Excellence Award 2022. The organisation recognises his outstanding contributions to the Information Systems Technology (IST) Panel, which the engineer and scientist most recently led for eight years as Vice-Chair and Chair.

In the category »Leadership«, Prof. Dr. Angela Ittel, President of the TU Braunschweig, was awarded, and the prize in the category »Social Impact« went to the DokForum of the RWTH Aachen University.

»Ship of the Year« Award for the world's first electric passenger ferry

The Norwegian electric passenger ferry Medstraum is the world's first emission-free, electrically operated high-speed ferry in regular service and ship of the year 2022. A European consortium worked for four years on revolutionary methods. The approaches, in which the Fraunhofer Institutes IEM and IAO were involved, should save 70 percent development time and 25 percent manufacturing costs for future ferry projects.

DFG Animal Welfare Prize for the Fraunhofer Translational Center for Regenerative Therapies

This year's winners of the Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft have been determined. As the DFG has now announced, the team from the Fraunhofer Translational Center for Regenerative Therapies (TLC-RT) and the University of Würzburg will be honored for its research into alternatives to animal testing based on cell-based tissue models, and will share the 80,000 euro prize with Dr. Michael K. Melzer from the University of Ulm.

Fraunhofer IAF Scientists receive IEEE Best Paper Award

The T-TST Best Paper Award 2022 of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) goes to a team of Fraunhofer IAF authors: awarded are Laurenz John, Axel Tessmann, Arnulf Leuther, Thomas Merkle, and Thomas Zwick (KIT) for their paper “Broadband 300-GHz Power Amplifier MMICs in InGaAs mHEMT Technology”. The T-TST Best Paper Award recognizes, on an annual basis, the most significant contribution published in the IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology. The award has been conferred at the International Microwave Symposium in Denver, Colorado, in June 2022.

Bronze for "Ferrotherm" in the INNOspace Masters competition

At the INNOspace Masters conference on July 5th, 2022, Dr. Andreas Dietz of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST was delighted to reach 3rd place in the INNOspace Masters innovation competition. The “Ferrotherm” project, on which Dr. Dietz is working together with researchers from the Fraunhofer ICT, was awarded a prize as part of the DLR Challenge 2021/2022. The aim is to develop carbon-free energy generation through iron combustion and electrochemical recycling that can also be used on the moon.

DECHEMA Prize 2021

Fraunhofer HHI photonics researchers receive EuMIC Prize

Scientists from the departments "Photonic Networks and Systems" and "Photonic Components" of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) are the winners of this year's European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference (EuMIC) Prize. The research team received the award for their paper "120 GBd SiGe-Based 2:1 Analog Multiplexer Module for Ultra-Broadband Transmission Systems." In this paper, Fraunhofer HHI’s photonics experts present the Analog Multiplexer Module jointly developed with researchers from the University of Stuttgart.

EU Innovation Prize for ROBBE from RWE & Fraunhofer IGD

RWE Nuclear and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD have received the EU's Nuclear Innovation Prize for their joint research project ROBBE (ROBoter-assisted processing of assemblies). The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the FORKA funding program (research for the dismantling of nuclear facilities), was selected by the jury with third prize for the disposal of radioactive waste.

Bjoern Globisch wins Karl Scheel Prize

Prof. Bjoern Globisch, group leader of the "Terahertz Sensor Systems" research group in the Photonic Components department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), has won this year's Karl Scheel Prize awarded by the Physical Society of Berlin (PGzB). This regional association of the German Physical Society (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V.) recognizes with this most prestigious prize the outstanding scientific achievements of their members made in the years immediately following their doctorate. Since 1958, the 5,000€ prize has been awarded to 80 scientists.

Slawomir Stanczak recognized with ITU “Certificate of Appreciation”

Prof. Slawomir Stanczak, head of the “Wireless Communications and Networks” department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), was honored by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) with the “Certificate of Appreciation”. The certificate recognizes his outstanding work as chairman of the “ITU-T Focus Group on Machine Learning for Future Networks including 5G”. Prof. Stanczak has contributed significantly to the international standardization work on the promising 5G technology. The focus group was established by ITU-T Study Group 13 at its meeting in Geneva, November 6-17, 2017. An architecture developed by the focus group was standardized before the official end of the working group.

Decai Chen receives Best Paper Award at IC3D

Decai Chen, research associate in the “Immersive Media and Communication” group of the “Vision and Imaging Technologies” department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), was awarded the Best Paper Award at the 2021 International Conference on 3D Immersion (IC3D). Together with his co-authors, he was able to prevail against three other nominated papers. The award-winning paper "Accurate Human Body Reconstruction for Volumetric Video" focuses on the use of deep-learning-based multi-view stereo networks to achieve high-fidelity human body reconstruction in volumetric video production.
