Fraunhofer will be showcasing solutions for the resilient and sustainable value creation of tomorrow at the digital HANNOVER MESSE 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll on day-to-day life, on people’s health, on businesses, on the domestic economy and on global trade. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, experts at Fraunhofer have been playing their part in the fight against the pandemic by providing front line support for businesses and communities in an effort to deal with its immediate effects and the aftermath. Drawing on outstanding research, entrepreneurial spirit and unique system expertise across all research fields, Fraunhofer is identifying new areas at an early stage, creating its own impetus for the future and offering precise custom-fit technology solutions to ensure the sustainable value creation of tomorrow – you can see this already today at the HANNOVER MESSE 2021 Digital Edition: #WeKnowSolutions

Hydrogen, quantum computing, artificial intelligence: Germany and Europe are on the way to a self-defined future. To create a sustainable road traffic system, hundreds of thousands of fuel cells will be needed for hydrogen-powered cars. How can we successfully produce fuel cell components in cycles lasting just seconds? How can we qualify SMEs without any expert knowledge of AI to adapt AI algorithms themselves and use them in their quality assurance procedures? Which opportunities do companies have to prepare for the use of 5G on an industrial scale and to consider their requirements and specific business processes from the outset? Fraunhofer will be answering this and other questions at this year’s Hannover Messe.

“It is essential that we promote the transformation of the German economy in the quest for sustainable value creation and to guarantee our competitiveness,” explains Fraunhofer President Prof. Reimund Neugebauer. “This includes encouraging sector coupling and new systems of mobility, launching hydrogen technologies and carbon cycles for sustainable production and expanding the digital infrastructure within Germany. An important prerequisite for meeting this challenge is sovereignty in central, strategically important areas of technology such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, cybersecurity and, of course, medicine. In this context, economy and ecology are not opposing forces. We can bring ecological and economic aspects into harmony by producing, working and living in ways that capture the spirit of a bioeconomy.”

Technological progress is the driving force behind economic efficiency, creating the basis for a resilient society and paving the way for sustainable activities. Our researchers offer solutions for technological sovereignty and for resilient enterprise – solutions for overcoming crises in a networked world in technically, socially and economically superior style.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence, hydrogen technologies, quantum computing, Industrie 4.0 applications in 5G networks, cognitive internet technologies for digital sovereignty, digital engineering and man-machine interaction, robotics, predictive maintenance and augmented reality: We will be showcasing the production of the future at HANNOVER MESSE Digital Edition 2021.

Press Releases

Fraunhofer launches quantum computing research platform in Germany

The first IBM Quantum System One installed in Europe is now available to companies and research organizations that wish to develop and test applied quantum algorithms and gather expertise.

Efficiently combating production loss and disruption in automated equipment

As connectivity increases in production processes, so does their complexity. Data analysis expertise is required for predicting equipment outages in good time and detecting what causes losses in efficiency. MOEE identifies the causes of production losses in connected equipment and makes it possible to quickly resolve disruptions.

Quality control via sound

Many companies do not have the confidence to try out artificial intelligence models. These models can, after all, quickly become confusing. As a result, they have a wealth of untapped potential for quality control. The new IDMT-ISAAC software now makes it possible for users without any expert knowledge of AI to also benefit from artificial intelligence applications. IDMT-ISAAC is set to be showcased at the Hannover Messe 2021.

How to quickly come to grips with complex manufacturing processes

Optimizing production plants so that they operate in a more energy-efficient way or produce fewer rejects is often difficult, as production quality depends on many different parameters. In the Fraunhofer ML4P lighthouse project, Fraunhofer experts have developed a process and software tools for comprehensively analyzing industrial production processes and adjusting them as required.

Inspecting finished components in real time

Delivered components have to undergo an incoming goods inspection to ensure they are correctly dimensioned and everything else is just right. MARQUIS – a software solution comprising machine learning and augmented reality – will be able to inspect components and their assemblies while on the move and in real time. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IGD are set to showcase the technology at the Hannover Messe.

Increasing efficiency in logistics and production

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is set to present a 5G testbed for Industrie 4.0 applications at the Hannover Messe 2021 from April 12-16. The development of 5G-based solutions is a crucial element in the implementation of new industrial IoT applications. Companies can try out various applications on this 5G testbed in Nuremberg under realistic conditions and have the developed.

Rapid material testing during sheet metal processing reduces failure and scrap

Fraunhofer researchers have developed an innovative process for the initial testing of sheet metal in production systems. The process involves combining tried and proven load tests with an AI software solution. Even before the first machining step, the software creates a prediction about how the material will behave during production.

High production rates for fuel cells

To create a sustainable road traffic system, hundreds of thousands of fuel cells will be needed for hydrogen-powered cars in the future. Until now, though, fuel cell production has been complex and too slow. The Fraunhofer team is therefore developing a continuous production line that will be able to process fuel cell components in cycles lasting just seconds. The pilot line is set to be presented at the Hannover Messe Digital Edition from April 12 to April 16, 2021.

IDS Connectors enable sovereign data exchange between machine tools across company boundaries

Using IDS Connectors from International Data Spaces (IDS), companies can confidently share and jointly process sensitive product data with business partners.

Fraunhofer INT and Digital Science link up the Technology Foresight Tool KATI with Dimensions Data

The Fraunhofer INT and Digital Science are collaborating to enable KATI, the technology foresight tool developed and used by Fraunhofer INT, to be combined with Digital Science’s Dimensions data.

Smart maintenance for machine tools – a holistic approach

Smart maintenance for machine tools, from intelligent condition monitoring and failure forecasts to maintenance support for service technicians – Fraunhofer IPK’s exhibit at Hannover Messe 2021 comprises all these aspects.

Graphite instead of gold: Thin layers for better hydrogen cars

Electric cars which can be filled up within five minutes, reach ranges like a diesel and yet drive "cleanly": This is already being achieved by hydrogen fuel cell vehicles today. However, so far they are still rare and expensive.

Brake disc coating: HICLAD maximizes protection against corrosion and wear
