Fraunhofer Technology Experience

What is the Fraunhofer Technology Experience about?

This series of interactive events in our Fraunhofer EU Office in Brussels not only showcases cutting-edge technology for the benefit of European citizens but also gives you the opportunity to test it yourself. Experience today the solutions of tomorrow!

Since September 2015, the Fraunhofer EU Office has organized these events together with Fraunhofer Institutes to present Fraunhofer’s wide variety of skills, technologies and solutions. First under the name Innovation Experience and then as Technology Experience.

After a two year break due to COVID-19, the in person event series is back on. Take a look at our upcoming and past events and stay tuned for what's to come.

From Belgian fries to your personal fork - Biological transformation in practice

December 1, 2022 12:30 - 15:00 CET

Have you ever wondered what happens to the oil being used to fry the notorious Belgian fries twice – as the recipe demands? What if the old oil helped you to eat your next fries?

The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK in Berlin, Germany, and its partners have been working on how technical systems can learn from nature and interact with it. The goal is not just to create a sustainable, biodegradable product but to integrate biological principles in the whole lifecycle – from design to manufacturing and use phase up to recycling: biological transformation in Industry 4.0.

The researchers of Fraunhofer IPK will demonstrate one example of how to implement these principles: turning food waste into biodegradable synthetic material. Through 3D printing technologies, the resulting material can be used for almost any product shape and simply composted after usage.

How does it work? Join us and our keynote speaker Peter Dröll, Director Prosperity, Directorate-General Research and Innovation EU Commission, to discuss cutting-edge technology and the meaning of biological transformation for our future. Test it for yourself and witness the process of turning old cooking oil into your personalized fork. Experience today the solutions of tomorrow!

Thursday, 1 December 2022, 12:30 to 15:00 CET
5th floor, Philanthropy House, Rue Royale 94, 1000 Brussels

CLEANTAN® leather tanning technology without waste water

Leather is a high performance, high quality and natural material. It has unique properties, from high resilience, protection against water, the capacity to hold liquid from the inside and a high customer acceptance. However, its production is anything but efficient in terms of chemical usage. Up to 40 percent of the chrome salts used for leather tanning worldwide find their way into the wastewater, and recycling is technically complex and cost-intensive. With its CLEANTAN® process, Fraunhofer UMSICHT almost completely reduces chromium-polluted wastewater.

Virtual training helps qualifying workers for new processes.

There is a lot of buzz about disruptive aspects of automation and robotics in labor, especially industrial work. However, there are still a lot of questions concerning the interaction between man and machine in this context. The first edition of the Fraunhofer Technology Experience will provide you the opportunity to test developments on Virtual and Augmented Reality from our research project »Innovationlab Hybrid Services in Logistics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML« and learn more on the new concept of social networked industry.
