Standardization

Standardization is a key pillar of the technological sovereignty sought in the field of quantum computing. Through reasonable and widely accepted standards, a higher degree of interoperability and a reduced risk of vendor lock-in can be achieved. Standardization efforts can address various structures and frameworks in the context of quantum computing; in particular, software and hardware architectures can be standardized at an abstract level, as well as interfaces and APIs, and criteria, measures, and procedures within the context of development and operational processes for quantum computers and quantum software.

Currently, researchers at Fraunhofer FOKUS are participating in various standardization activities:

  • CEN/CENELEC Workshops on Quantum Technology
  • Under the leadership of Fraunhofer FOKUS, the “DIN SPEC 91480: Benchmarking Quantum Computers with Determined KPIs” is currently in its final stages—the final document will present various strategies, methods, and metrics for evaluating quantum computers from the user’s perspective.
  • Another project, “DIN SPEC 91520: Interface Between Quantum Computer Backends and Software Frameworks,” aimed at defining the APIs for quantum backends, is also underway under the leadership of Fraunhofer FOKUS.

The activities listed will be continued and expanded in the coming years. The goals pursued include achieving technological sovereignty in quantum computing in Germany and Europe, avoiding vendor lock-in effects, ensuring interoperability, and strengthening the platform independence of the European quantum software industry.
