Biotechnology

Fraunhofer makes biotechnology a key technology for health, sustainability and industrial value creation. Green biotechnology draws on plants and microorganisms for sustainable nutrition, agriculture and the bioeconomy. In red biotechnology, Fraunhofer is developing new active ingredients, diagnostics and treatments for medicine. This is complemented by white biotechnology with the development of energy and resource‑efficient bio-based production processes for industry and the environment. Fraunhofer draws on synergy effects in activities in these areas to provide a comprehensive research and service offering, from molecules to products and from the laboratory to the production plant.

Selected projects and initiatives

Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE

We make the entire plastics value chain more circular. With systems analysis and life cycle assessment, circular design, new polymer types and additives, advanced recycling, prototypes and demonstrator plants, we put the application in applied biotechnology research.

Industrial scaling

Fraunhofer uses the open scaling platform in Leuna to support industrial scaling of biotech and chemical processes. Flexible, modular reactor and plant technology enable the development and optimization of processes and products to market readiness.

Targeted degradation of disease-related proteins

The PROXIDRUGS future cluster is developing new treatments that can use proximity-inducing active ingredients for targeted deactivation and degradation of proteins that trigger diseases. This opens new treatment possibilities for a broad range of diseases.

Living drugs

SaxoCell is developing new ways to make gene and cell therapies safe, efficient and affordable. The goal is to provide so-called living drugs for clinical use on a large scale, strengthening both healthcare and regional value creation.

New nutrition and food systems

New cultivation and production methods should facilitate the production of innovative, nutritionally high-quality and safe food in the future.

Fraunhofer Group for Resource Technologies and Bioeconomy VRB

The Fraunhofer Group for Resource Technologies and Bioeconomy VRB develops biotechnological, process engineering, circular and systemic solutions for the responsible utilization of our resources.
