Security and defense research

With its security and defense research, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft strengthens Germany’s technological sovereignty and resilience. The institutes are developing applied solutions for defense and civil security, ranging from reconnaissance, sensors and decision support to cybersecurity, information security and protecting critical infrastructure. Working in close collaboration with the Bundeswehr, government ministries and industry, Fraunhofer combines scientific excellence with operational relevance and accelerates the transfer of security-related technologies to practical application.

Selected projects and initiatives

Hypersonic threats

The Fraunhofer Segment for Defense and Security VVS performs research in the field of detecting and defending against hypersonic weapons. An overview of its activities is given here:

Defense against drones

The Ukraine war shows how dangerous drone attacks can be. How can they be defended against cost-effectively and reliably?

Future air defense

In an ambitious European defense project, a new air defense system combining future technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, crypto components or human-machine interactions is under development. This represents a high-tech milestone for Europe.
