Through our research, we contribute to sustainable development that is consistent with an environmentally friendly, economically successful and socially equitable world. We believe that this is our responsibility. Our research follows the principles of scientific integrity, transparency and ethical responsibility.

Solutions for challenges facing society

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations provide an important, internationally recognized framework for Fraunhofer. They unite environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development and also provide key insights for our research. Many of our projects help support these goals through technological innovations. This is illustrated by the following projects with clear links to specific SDGs and their targets. Both ongoing and completed projects covering a range of topics are shown, specifically selected for their differing sizes to reflect the breadth of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's research activities.

SDG 1 – No poverty

Agrivoltaics (APV)

Agriculture is under pressure due to climate damage, limited land area and rising costs. With INSPIRED, Fraunhofer ISE combines fruit cultivation and solar power generation in a single space.

 

SDG 2 – Zero hunger

Feeding Africa

Cowpea is a major source of plant-based protein in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the SCOPE project, Fraunhofer IME is developing robust strains that can better withstand heat and drought.


 

SDG 3 – Good health and well-being

Digital surgery

Complex procedures require coordination and precise planning in the operating room. In the LIROS project, Fraunhofer IMTE is developing networked environments to enable personalized procedures.

 

SDG 4 – Quality education

AI for schools

Schools are not teaching the effective use of AI, even though it shapes our daily lives and work. In the AI4Schools project, Fraunhofer IAIS teaches basic knowledge, digital skills and critical thinking.




 

SDG 5 – Gender equality

Equal opportunity

Many women receive inadequate support during menopause. In the PETRA AI project, Fraunhofer IESE is developing an AI-powered app for improving health literacy.


 

SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation

Clean water

Industrial wastewater contains pollutants that are difficult to remove by traditional methods. Fraunhofer IKTS is developing a system that cleans water using photocatalysis.


 

SDG 7 – Affordable and clean energy

Storing wind energy

In the WindStore project, Fraunhofer IEE is developing a storage management system to balance out fluctuations in offshore wind power. The goals are better grid integration, lower costs and improved stability.


 

 

SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth

Building skills

The working world is changing, demanding new skills. In the Global Upskill initiative, Fraunhofer IAO is developing concepts to specifically promote new skills.


 

SDG 9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure

A circular economy for 3D printing

There is a great need for circular solutions for plastics. In the AKROPOLYS project, Fraunhofer IAPT is developing processes to make plastic waste usable for 3D printing.

 

SDG 10 – Reduced inequalities

Affordable housing

Many people need access to affordable housing. In the HouseInc project, Fraunhofer ISI is analyzing the causes and developing approaches for affordable and sustainable housing.

 

SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities

Safely navigating crises

Catastrophic flooding in Germany's Ahr Valley was followed by a growing need for situation reports. In the LOKIK project, Fraunhofer FKIE is developing a digital platform that provides real-time support to emergency services.


 

SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production

A circular economy for lithium

The growing demand for batteries is also increasing the demand for lithium, cobalt and nickel. In the MoLIBity project, Fraunhofer IKTS is developing methods to recover these metals.

 

SDG 13 – – Climate action

CO₂ as a resource

The cement industry generates high levels of emissions. In the CO₂-Syn project, Fraunhofer UMSICHT is investigating how process gases can be used as raw materials.


 

SDG 14 – Life below water

Trash-free oceans

Plastic waste is polluting the oceans. In the SeaClear2.0 project, Fraunhofer CML is developing autonomous systems to detect, classify and recover waste.



 

SDG 15 – Life on land

Digital protection for peatlands

Peatlands store large amounts of carbon but release CO₂ when they are drained. In the VALPEATS project, Fraunhofer IGD is developing a platform that digitally maps and assesses peatlands.



 

SDG 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions

Maritime risks

Critical infrastructure systems such as ports are subject to many risks. In the KIRMES project, Fraunhofer CML is developing systems to detect threats and provide an up-to-date situational overview.

FIVER – Research with Social Responsibility – A Reflection Guide for Fraunhofer Project Teams

Building on LeNa, a new reflection guide specifically for Fraunhofer project teams was developed in 2023 as part of a follow-up Fraunhofer project. The guide is intended to provide project teams with assurance, prior to the project’s start, through a jointly led, open internal discussion, that all relevant aspects of responsibility have been taken into account. In particular, researchers can contribute their individual moral perspectives and are made aware of (new) ethical issues.

Good Scientific Practice

Scientific integrity and compliance with the principles of good scientific practice are indispensable requirements for scientific work. As an applied research organization, these principles are the basis of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s identity. Fraunhofer applies utmost care when implementing scientific methods and documenting data, as this is the basis on which commercial customers and the public place their trust in us.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is closely monitoring current developments and the resurgence in Germany of antidemocratic groups hostile to the constitution with great concern. As a nonprofit research organization, Fraunhofer maintains neutrality toward the interests of individuals and groups in politics, business and society. At the same time, Fraunhofer clearly stands against all dehumanizing ideas and antidemocratic efforts by parties and organizations. This includes any attacks on the liberal democratic order, all anti-Semitic and racist ideas and exclusion and discrimination of any kind.

The goal of a free and open society must always also be an open and rational culture of debate. Fraunhofer is combating divisions in society with fact-based communication and by strengthening local economies and value chains based on innovation.

Transfer Examples

As a publicly funded non-profit organization, Fraunhofer is not permitted to make charitable donations at an institutional level. We do engage in community work in other ways, such as by providing extensive support initiatives for next-generation talent, by organizing special events and collaboration projects or by supporting the civic engagement of Fraunhofer employees.

We share expert knowledge and recommendations from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft with policymakers. This allows us to keep up to date on relevant political developments and to translate policy challenges into research programs and strategies. Various formats enable us to stay in ongoing communication with the German federal parliament (Bundestag), federal ministries and political parties.
