Microelectronics

Not only do we rely on microelectronics every day when brushing our teeth, driving and using our phones, this technology also plays a crucial role in AI, quantum technologies, aerospace and medical technology. Most chips are currently manufactured in Taiwan, China and South Korea. For years, experts and associations have warned of dangerous dependencies and the impending loss of Europe’s competitiveness. At the same time, new technological approaches are necessary: Electronic systems are becoming increasingly complex, energy-efficient and specialized. Fraunhofer is developing sustainable alternatives along the entire microelectronics and nanoelectronics value chain.

Selected projects and initiatives

Advanced Packaging and Heterogeneous Integration for Electronic Components and Systems (APECS)

Coordinated by Fraunhofer, the first pilot line of its kind in Europe is currently being established, covering the entire development chain in state-of-the-art chip production.

German Chips Competence Center

The German Chips Competence Center (G3C) is the central contact point for companies and researchers looking to implement innovative ideas in chip and wafer technology. It provides access to infrastructure, tools and expertise as well as curated network connections with technology providers and appropriate design teams.

A network for chip design in Germany

The Chipdesign Germany network is a German platform for pre-competitive, open dialogue between all players involved in chip design. The aim is to develop suitable cooperation structures, consulting services for start-ups and SMEs as well as new business models.

Green ICT

In the Green ICT project, Fraunhofer is collaborating with companies to investigate how to improve ecological sustainability along the value chain.

Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD)

As a central contact point, FMD is bundling leading-edge technology and system solutions from its collaborating institutes in a comprehensive customer-specific package.
