Artificial intelligence (AI)

Numerous Fraunhofer institutes are already developing AI technologies for applications across all sectors and industries – from automotive solutions and medical technology to non-destructive testing. We cover the entire value chain, from data and models to scalable applications. We ensure technological sovereignty with approaches that are open, interoperable and trustworthy. The guiding force behind all these efforts is the ambition to create secure, trusted and energy-efficient systems, combining expert knowledge with data-driven machine learning to make AI algorithms more transparent. We are building on this to advance the development of the next AI generation and to integrate cutting-edge research in industrial applications.

Selected projects and initiatives

The European open-source AI language model

We are developing a powerful AI language model with 100 billion parameters, which will be made available to industry and society as an open-source solution.

AI platform for industry

The vendor-neutral DeployAI platform offers fast access to generative AI and large language models from Europe, especially for small and medium-sized companies.

Agentic AI

Reliability and control are needed to implement autonomous AI agents in professional applications. Our research is focused on bridging the gap between the latest research findings and industry requirements.

AI chip design

High-performance AI needs specialized chips. These chips can also be designed more quickly, efficiently and safely using AI. In a software/hardware co-design approach, we develop both AI-supported design methods and specialized CMOS technology for AI hardware architecture.

Embodied/physical AI

We are combining our expertise in engineering and materials science with AI to develop AI solutions for machines that can perceive, learn and act.

Federated unlearning

A new method enables precise removal of data from decentralized AI models.

AI-supported software engineering

AI tools already cover many software development tasks, from determining requirements and architecture to implementation and validation. Fraunhofer is researching the working and reliability of these tools as they affect system quality.

AI best-practice projects in key sectors

Selected success stories of practical AI applications, from intelligent analyses to automated processes.
