Germany's High-Tech Agenda

Our expertise for the High-Tech Agenda – boosting innovation in Germany

Germany's High-Tech Agenda (HTAD) is intended to lend new innovative strength to Germany as a hub of research and industry. This initiative aims to strengthen technological sovereignty, establish a mission-oriented approach and achieve specific targets for value creation. As a strategic partner for transfer, Fraunhofer employs its expertise in applied research to support the focused action plan of the German federal government – in close collaboration with industry, startups and scientific partners. This page provides an overview of Fraunhofer’s expertise and selected projects in the key technologies and research areas of the High-Tech Agenda.

Key technologies of the high-tech agenda

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Our research contributes significantly to the practical development of secure, trustworthy AI technologies that use resources efficiently. We are thus effectively incorporating artificial intelligence in key industries and are improving productivity and value creation for Germany as an innovation hub.

Quantum technologies

The goal of quantum research at Fraunhofer is to implement the results of basic research in practical applications as quickly as possible and to fully exploit the potential of high-precision sensors, secure quantum communications and powerful quantum computing.

Microelectronics

Microelectronics is the key to digital sovereignty and commercial success. This is prerequisite for entire areas of industry and can reduce dependencies. Those who master it will shape the future. In its microelectronics development, Fraunhofer is focusing on resource efficiency, safety, portability, communications, production and next-generation computing.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the key to better medicine, safer nutrition and more efficient and environmentally sound manufacturing processes. Fraunhofer facilitates the use of materials, structures and principles of living nature in technology and specific products.

Fusion energy and climate-neutral energy generation

Our research areas include business-oriented technology development for energy generation through nuclear fusion, the digitalization of the energy sector, technologies for renewable energy generation, energy system analyses and storage technologies, as well as energy efficiency technologies.

Technologies for climate-neutral transportation

Sustainable production, drives and energy carriers are prerequisite for the transportation of tomorrow. Fraunhofer bundles expertise for changes in mobility, including in the areas of battery research, city and traffic planning, public transport, AI, urban logistics and electric mobility, car sharing and transport policy.

Strategic research fields of the High-Tech Agenda

Aerospace

The increasing interdependence of aerospace and civilian technology necessitates multidirectional technology transfer. Fraunhofer conducts research in communications, monitoring, materials, surfaces and sensors and has already participated in 60 space missions.

Health research

Health research at Fraunhofer is interdisciplinary and follows the 4D approach of drugs, diagnostics, devices and data. As a whole these areas enable pioneering innovations and deliver tangible benefits for the healthcare system and for patients.

Security and defense research

Fraunhofer institutes develop, implement and optimize technologies, processes and services for national defense and resilience. With research, technology transfer and innovation in collaboration with industry and the economy, they make important contributions to strengthening external, internal and civil security. Potential hazards are identified at an early stage, consequential damage is minimized and risks become manageable.

Marine, climate and sustainability research

Fraunhofer is developing solutions for the responsible use of the oceans and is conducting research into how climate protection, adaptation and neutrality can be achieved from a technical, economic and societal perspective.
