Aerospace

Fraunhofer develops key technology for climate-neutral aviation and New Space applications. Key areas of investigation are climate-friendly propulsion systems and energy carriers (batteries and hydrogen technologies for hybrid and fully electric propulsion systems), lightweight design and new materials, digitalization and automation of processes, autonomous aviation and aerospace systems, satellite and communications technologies and electronics and sensor systems. Fraunhofer is implementing new research findings in industrial, mission-capable aerospace applications in national and international joint research projects.

Selected projects and initiatives

New Space

Fraunhofer institutes are developing scalable satellite systems, sensors and manufacturing processes that make Earth observation, communication and new business models in space both cost-effective and quickly feasible.

Clean Aviation

Clean Aviation is the European Union’s leading research and innovation program for transforming aviation toward a sustainable and climate-neutral future.
