Technologies for climate-neutral transportation

Fraunhofer develops technologies for climate-neutral transportation along the entire value chain. The institutes are developing high-performance batteries and battery supply chains, electric and hydrogen‑based drive systems and climate-friendly fuels for road, rail, air and ship traffic. This is complemented by materials and production research, digital and AI‑based mobility systems and autonomous and connected vehicles. Fraunhofer thus implements new mobility technologies from research in industrial applications – efficiently, sustainably and competitively.

Selected projects and initiatives

Battery cell research

The latest advances in local battery research offer opportunities to strengthen European-made battery technology and to regain technological sovereignty. Across 26 institutes and research units, Fraunhofer pools its expertise along the entire value chain, from material research to cell production.

Future battery production

Fraunhofer has an end-to-end research and development pipeline for battery cell production. The production of the first electrically fully functioning lithium-ion battery cell in the FFB PreFab represented the first end-to-end process chain using exclusively European plant equipment, from electrode production to the charged cell.

H₂Giga - cost-effective production of green hydrogen

The goal is to develop cost-effective mass production of electrolyzers for generating green hydrogen, which is key to climate-neutral mobility in heavy goods, ship and air transportation.

Electric mobility

Fraunhofer examines the different factors and forms of electric mobility in many different research projects and has accumulated extensive expertise over the years.

Sustainable transportation infrastructure

The position paper Investing for a sustainable transportation infrastructure from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft shows how strategic investments in central infrastructures can sustainably strengthen Germany's competitiveness.

Fraunhofer People Mobility

The member institutes of the Fraunhofer People Mobility working group combine the expertise needed for the transformation of mobility services.
