Sustainable Lift-Off: Fraunhofer is Shaping the Future of Aerospace

Efficiently Cooling Satellite Components in Space

The vacuum of space makes cooling extremely challenging. The Fraunhofer HHI is developing technologies for thermal management in aerospace applications. The research team is using femtosecond and nanosecond lasers to treat the outer surfaces of satellite components and rocket nozzles to improve their heat dissipation. 

 

Innovation From Above: How Mesh Networks Help Control Drone Swarms

When multiple drones are deployed, they generally are controlled centrally by mobile communications up to now. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IIS are working on a decentralized solution that is less susceptible to interference while at the same time ensuring greater flexibility. 

 

ESA CO2M Mission: Optics for Greenhouse Gas Monitoring

ESA's CO2M space mission aims to find out exactly how many CO₂ -greenhouse gas in Earth's atmosphere is caused by human activity. Researchers from Jena have developed and manufactured what is probably the most important optical assembly for the spectrometers on board the satellites: the disperser. 

 

EcoRudder

Thermoplastic honeycomb core sandwich structures can be processed efficiently and are recyclable. In the future, these advantages will also be utilized in the manufacture of highly stressed components in aircraft construction. The "EcoRudder" research project has now demonstrated the potential of thermoplastic sandwich constructions for control surfaces such as the rudder of short- and medium-range aircraft. 

 

Compact space spectrometer for sustainable agriculture

Researchers at Fraunhofer IOF in collaboration with Airbus have developed a hyperspectral spectrometer as part of the “Rainbow” project, funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The technology enables the creation of digital field maps that can be used in agriculture as precise application maps for location-specific measures.
