Innovative Surfaces to Rapidly Load Bone Implants with Antibiotics

Infectious complications are not uncommon after implant placement. The risk is higher in heavily contaminated wounds, which are particularly common in war zones such as Ukraine, where many bone injuries require treatment. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM in Bremen have developed a new functionalized surface that can be loaded with antibiotics.

Increasing Autonomy for Paraplegic Women

Paraplegics need a new catheter about four to eight times a day to be able to empty their bladder. Due to their anatomy, women usually require assistance when replacing their catheter. This can not only be embarrassing for them but also increases the risk of urinary tract infections — and thus of bladder cancer later on in life. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA now want to make everyday life easier for affected women.

AI-Ready Data for Medicine – Interactive Dashboard and Training Initiative

At MEDICA 2025, Fraunhofer FIT will present a novel solution, which combines transparency, traceability, and capacity building in the use of medical data for artificial intelligence. The aim is to make the development and application of AI-driven methods in healthcare more understandable, verifiable, and practice-oriented.

Home Testing: A minimally Invasive Solution for Quick and Easy Determination of Blood Potassium Levels

In collaboration with French start-up Ki'tech, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM want to revolutionize patient monitoring with a minimally invasive solution that measures biomarkers, including potassium, in the subcutaneous interstitial fluid.
