Hydrogen Safety

In the field of hydrogen safety, Fraunhofer conducts material and system testing up to their stress limits (abuse testing). This includes damage analyses and safety modeling to characterize behavior from the material level to the complete system, as well as condition monitoring for predictive maintenance. Simulations of safety, design, and assessment scenarios are also carried out to ensure a comprehensive understanding of safety aspects. Fraunhofer initiated and plays a leading role in the independent National Alliance for Hydrogen Safety (NAWS). In addition, Fraunhofer actively participates in standardization and certification committees to develop and establish standards for the safe use of hydrogen technologies. These activities contribute to ensuring the safety and reliability of hydrogen technologies across all areas of application, thereby fostering trust in these future-oriented technologies.
