Fraunhofer develops market-ready and industrial-scale solutions for all electrolysis technologies − from Alkaline Electrolysis (AEL, AEMEL) and Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (PEMEL) to High-Temperature Electrolysis (SOEL), as well as CO₂ co-electrolysis, bio-electrolysis, and electro-organic syntheses − including the scalable production technologies required for each. In the field of high-temperature electrolysis (SOEL), the focus lies on developing innovative materials and technologies for cell and stack production and on building complete production lines up to pilot plant scale. For AEL, AEMEL, and PEMEL technologies, Fraunhofer offers comprehensive expertise along the entire development and scaling chain. This includes the development and evaluation of materials and stack components (catalysts, separators, PTLs, BPPs, seals) and the development of high-throughput manufacturing processes (electrodes, MEAs, BPPs, separators). A unique strength is the scaling of components up to pilot-plant size, including stack assembly. Digital mapping of processes and the integration of simulations (e.g., CFD, shunt currents) enable predictive development. Fraunhofer also offers end-to-end testing of components and stacks − from laboratory scale to megawatt-scale systems under industrial conditions. Thanks to the unique breadth and depth of its R&D capabilities, Fraunhofer delivers optimal solutions for industrial applications.
