Energy for Our Future

Electrification and the digital transformation are expected to triple the demand for electricity in industrialized countries between now and 2050. To achieve climate neutrality and resilience even in the face of these changes, new energy sources and a transformation of the energy system are now more urgent than ever.

Research and development play a major role in ensuring the success of the energy transition. This encompasses technological innovations, new business models and a deep-seated restructuring of the energy system, all of which will also offer opportunities for Germany as a hub of innovation.

Fraunhofer is working to further develop and refine hydrogen technologies and geothermal systems while boosting their efficiency and at the same time to make nuclear fusion possible in the long term as an ecofriendly source of energy. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has dedicated Science Year 2025 to these energy forms of the future.

Our web special contains full information on all Fraunhofer events and activities and key projects focusing on the energy of the future.

“Just like the rest of the world, Germany is facing the question of how to bring about an efficient, sustainable and resilient energy system of the future. Together with industry and government, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is hard at work on finding an answer. We believe our role lies in increasing the efficiency of the existing technologies that show promise for the future and remaining open to new technologies.”

Energy technologies of the future

Hydrogen: Small Molecules, Big Potential

Hydrogen could play an important role in the energy transition by serving as a means of storing excess wind or solar energy. Electrolysis can be used to produce emission-free hydrogen from water.

Geothermal systems: warmth from the earth

Geothermal systems harness the warmth present in the ground for ecofriendly heating and cooling systems. Fraunhofer does research on near-surface and deep (including medium-deep) geothermal systems to advance the transformation of the heat supply.

Nuclear fusion: energy from the sun

Nuclear fusion promises to be a pioneering technology for generating energy. Fraunhofer is working on moving it into application more quickly.
